Before installing new piston rings, check ring end gaps. Lay out piston/connecting rod assemblies and new ring sets for matching. Insert top ring into first cylinder, square it with walls using piston's top, and measure end gap with feeler gauges. Ensure gap falls within limits, repeat for each ring and cylinder. Double-check rings with incorrect end gaps. Excessive gap critical if over 0.040 inches. Install rings on pistons, starting with oil control ring and ensuring smooth turning of side rails. Install middle ring, following manufacturer's instructions, then top ring on each piston. Use caution and proper installation procedures. Repeat for remaining pistons and rings.

Excess end gap isn't critical unless it's greater than 0.040-inch. Double-check to make sure you have the correct rings for your engine.

The number two (middle) ring is installed next. It is usually stamped with a mark which must face up, toward the top of the piston. Always follow the instructions printed on the ring package or box, as different manufacturers may require different approaches. Do not mix up the top and middle rings, as they have different cross sections.

If the gap is larger or smaller than specified, double-check to ensure you have the correct rings before proceeding. If there is any doubt, contact the parts store where the rings were purchased to verify that the correct ring set is being used.
