To begin troubleshooting an assumed fuel pump failure, look for gas in the tank. A defective electric fuel pump leads to reduced fuel flow or pressure, which results in poor performance or engine not running at all. These are some steps to take to ascertain whether the pump is operating properly, open the fuel filler cap and have a friend switch on the ignition key while listening for a short whine as the system gets pressurized. The circuit will be the issue if this fails to provoke any movement from it. For testing purposes, use a fuel pressure gauge on the test port and compare readings at certain points. In return-type systems, test pressure at idle and perform further checks such as disconnecting the vacuum hose from the fuel pressure regulator. In return-less models, fix your gauge between that point where you disconnect delivery hose and where fuel rail is connected.

Remove the fuel tank. Remove any dirt that has accumulated where the fuel sender/pump is attached to the fuel tank. Don't allow dirt to enter the fuel tank. Tum the lock ring counterclockwise with lock/ring wrench (or other suitable tool) until It's loose. Remove the lock ring. Carefully pull the fuel pump/sending unit assembly from the tank. Don't bend the arm for the sending unit float. Remove the old lock ring seal and discard it. Clean the fuel pump mounting flange, the tan mounting surface and seal ring groove. Installation is the reverse of the removal procedure with the following additions: Apply a thin coat of heavy grease to the new lock ring seal to hold it in place during assembly. Install the seal in the lock ring groove. Install the fuel sender/pump unit into the fuel tank so that the tabs of the unit are positioned into the slots in the fuel tank. Make sure to keep the seal in place during installation until the lock ring has been tightened properly. Hold the fuel sender/pump unit in place, install and tighten the locking ring clockwise with the lock ring wrench, or equivalent, until the stop is against the retainer ring tab.

a) Replace the fuel filter (it may be clogged). b) Look for a pinched or clogged fuel hose or line between the fuel tank and the fuel rail. c) Look for leaks in the fuel feed line. d) Check for leaking injectors.

Apply a thin coat of heavy grease to the new lock ring seal to hold it in place during assembly, and install the seal in the lock ring groove.
