When removing spark plug wires, exercise caution by grasping and twisting the insulator back and forth to free it from the spark plug, avoiding direct pulling on the wire to prevent separation from the connector inside the insulator. For installation, apply silicone grease to the boot whenever a high tension wire is removed from a spark plug, coil, or distributor terminal housing, ensuring the entire interior surface is coated with Ford silicone grease 07AZ 19A331-A or an equivalent. Install each wire on the correct terminal of the coil pack or distributor cap, ensuring the terminal connector inside the insulator is fully seated, with the No. 1 terminal identified on the cap. Remove wire separators from the old wire set and install them on the new set in approximately the same position, then connect the wires to the proper spark plugs, ensuring all are fully seated on their terminals. For testing, check one spark plug wire at a time, marking any defective wire before returning it to its original location, and inspect the remaining wires. For models with a distributor, remove the distributor cap and visually inspect the spark plug wires for burns, cuts, or breaks, checking the spark plug boots and nipples on the distributor cap and coil, replacing any damaged wiring. Ensure the spark plug wires are firmly seated on the distributor cap, disconnect the suspected defective wire at the spark plug, and measure the wire's resistance using an ohmmeter between the distributor cap terminal and the spark plug terminal, avoiding any puncturing of the wire. A resistance of less than 7000 ohms per foot indicates the wire is good, while greater resistance suggests it should be replaced. For models without a distributor, visually inspect the spark plug wires and ensure they are firmly seated on the coil pack, then follow the same testing procedure as with the distributor, measuring resistance between the coil terminal and the spark plug terminal, with the same resistance criteria for determining wire condition.
