    Q:
How do you remove and install Shift Lever on Lincoln MKX? Posted by Customer
    A:
To begin, remove the upper bezel of the floor console around the shifter. For 2010 and earlier models, disconnect the Transmission Control Switch (TCS) electrical connector, then pry the shift lever covers apart from the top and bottom, noting that the covers will need replacement. Remove the two screws in the knob assembly and pull the knob while extracting the TCS harness. For 2011 through 2018 Edge models and 2011 through 2015 MKX models, pull the shift knob boot up, disconnect the electrical connector, remove the two screws, and pull the knob off the shaft. Next, disconnect the cable from the negative battery terminal and wait at least two minutes before proceeding. Remove the floor console center trim cover; for 2010 and earlier models, remove the power outlet trim panel fasteners and move the panel aside. For 2011 and later MKX models, remove the shift lever trim panel held by four screws on each side, and if equipped with ambient light, unclip the wiring harness and rotate the light counterclockwise to remove it. Use a trim tool to pry the cable eye from the ballstud on the shifter, release the tabs on the sides of the shift cable to detach it from the console, disconnect any electrical connectors at the shifter assembly, and remove the mounting bolts to take out the shifter assembly from the floor. The shift cable should be adjusted any time it has been disconnected. For the paddle shifter, disconnect the cable from the negative battery terminal and wait at least two minutes. Remove the airbag module from the steering wheel, then remove the steering wheel switch trim panel screws and disconnect the electrical connectors from the switch trim panel before removing it. Disconnect the electrical connectors to the paddle shifter, remove the two mounting screws, and take out the paddle shifter. For the gear shift module (GSM) in 2019 Edge models, open the floor console storage armrest, use a plastic trim tool to disengage the retaining clips around the shift console/cup holder trim panel, and remove the panel while disconnecting the electrical connectors. Disengage the storage bin edge trim fasteners and remove the trim pieces along the edges of the storage compartment bin and Front Controls Interface Module (FCIM). Remove the storage compartment fasteners, pull the storage compartment out from the floor console, and disconnect any electrical connectors. Remove the GSM console frame fasteners and the console frame assembly from the top of the center console, disconnecting any electrical connectors. Remove the GSM mounting screws from the backside of the center console frame and separate the GSM from the console frame, with installation being the reverse of removal. For 2017 and later MKX models, remove the Front Controls Interface Module, carefully pry off the small trim panel along the edge of the gear shift module on the left side of the FCIM, and remove the GSM mounting screws from the backside of the FCIM to separate the GSM from the FCIM, with installation being the reverse of removal.
