Disconnect the battery, detach the air cleaner outlet tube, and remove the accelerator cable splash shield, bracket, and cable from the throttle body. Disconnect all remaining hoses and electrical connectors. Additional steps may be required for specific engine models, such as disconnecting the Idle Air Control (IAC) valve electrical connector, vacuum lines, PCV valve, spark plug wires, and other components. Remove the upper intake manifold mounting bolts, lift the manifold off the fuel rail, and discard the gasket.

Clean away all traces of old gasket material and remove oil and dirt with a cloth and solvent, such as lacquer thinner.

The engine must be set to TDC for number 1 cylinder before removing the synchronizer. Do not move the crankshaft after removing the synchronizer or the engine fuel system will be out of time.

Disconnect the electrical connectors from the coolant temperature sender and coolant temperature sensor at the front of the intake manifold.

Run the engine and check for oil, coolant, and vacuum leaks.

Disconnect the negative cable from the battery and remove the drive belt.

Remove the mounting bolts and discard the throttle body gasket. Clean the gasket mating surfaces and use a new gasket when reinstalling. Tighten the throttle body mounting bolts securely.

Use a tap of the correct size to chase the threads in the bolt holes, then use compressed air (if available) to remove the debris from the holes. Warning: Wear safety glasses or a face shield to protect your eyes when using compressed air! Remove excessive carbon deposits and corrosion from the exhaust and coolant passages in the heads and manifold.
