    Q:
How do electric rear view mirrors operate and what steps should be taken if they malfunction on 2000-2011 Ford Ranger? Posted by Customer
    A:
The electric rear view mirrors utilize two motors for adjustments, one for vertical movement and another for horizontal movement. The control switch features a selector that directs voltage to either the left or right mirror. With the ignition in the ACC position, roll down the windows and operate the mirror control switch through all functions for both mirrors, listening for the sound of the motors. If no sound is heard or the mirror glass remains stationary, there may be an issue with the drive mechanism, necessitating removal and disassembly of the mirror to identify the problem. If the mirrors are unresponsive and silent, check the mirror fuse in the fuse block. If the fuse is intact, access the back of the mirror control switch by removing the switch bezel without disconnecting the attached wire, then turn the ignition On to check for voltage at the switch; there should be voltage at one terminal. In the absence of voltage, inspect the wiring between the fuse panel and switch for any faults. If voltage is present, disconnect the switch and test for continuity in all operating positions; replace the switch if continuity is lacking. Reconnect the switch and locate the wire leading to ground; while keeping the switch connected, use a jumper wire to connect this wire to ground. If the mirror operates normally, repair the faulty ground connection. If the mirror remains nonfunctional, remove it and check the wires for voltage while the ignition is On and the selector switch is set appropriately, ensuring voltage is present at one of the switch-to-mirror wires in each position except the neutral "off" position. If voltage is absent in any position, inspect the wiring between the mirror and switch for issues. If voltage is confirmed, test the mirror off the vehicle using jumper wires and replace it if it fails this test.
