Signs include scoring and scuffing on the thrust faces of the skirt, holes in the piston crown, and burned areas at the edge of the crown. These issues may indicate overheating or abnormal combustion, and the cooling and lubrication systems should be checked thoroughly.

After removing the bearing insert, push the connecting rod/piston assembly out through the top of the engine using a wooden or plastic hammer handle. If resistance is felt, double-check to ensure that all of the ridge was removed from the cylinder.

Use your fingernail to feel if a ridge has formed at the upper limit of ring travel, which is about 1/4-inch down from the top of each cylinder. If ridges are present due to carbon deposits or cylinder wear, they must be completely removed with a special tool called a ridge reamer before removing the pistons. Follow the manufacturer's instructions with the tool, and do not let it cut into the ring travel area more than 1/32-inch.

Each piston should be carefully inspected for cracks around the skirt, at the pin bosses, and at the ring lands.

The connecting rod end play must be checked, and the measured end play should be compared to the specifications to ensure it's correct. If new rods or a new crankshaft were installed, the rods may need to be resized.

After the cylinder ridges have been removed, turn the engine so the crankshaft is facing up.
