The piston/connecting rod assemblies must be cleaned, and the original piston rings removed from the pistons. It is important to always use new piston rings when the engine is reassembled.

Tap out two of the old rod bolts, cut the heads off, slip rubber hose over them, and screw them into the connecting rod to use as alignment devices during piston/rod installation.

Use your fingernail to feel if a ridge has formed at the upper limit of ring travel, which is about 1/4-inch down from the top of each cylinder. If ridges are present due to carbon deposits or cylinder wear, they must be completely removed with a special tool called a ridge reamer before removing the pistons. Follow the manufacturer's instructions with the tool, and do not let it cut into the ring travel area more than 1/32-inch.

If the clearance is not as specified, check for dirt or oil between the bearing inserts and the connecting rod or cap, recheck the journal diameter, and if necessary, replace the bearing with an undersize bearing.
