    Q:
What is the location and function of the Throttle Position Sensor (TPS) on Ford Excursion? Posted by Customer
    A:
The Throttle Position Sensor (TPS) is located on the end of the throttle shaft on the throttle body. By monitoring the output voltage from the TPS, the PCM can determine fuel delivery based on throttle valve angle (driver demand). A broken or loose TPS can cause intermittent bursts of fuel from the injectors and an unstable idle because the PCM thinks the throttle is moving. A problem with the TPS circuits will set a diagnostic trouble code. Ensure the ignition key is in the OFF position. 2005 AND EARLIER MODELS: Remove the air filter housing duct at the throttle body. On 2005 models with 5.4L engines, the entire air cleaner must be removed. Remove the accelerator shield if it interferes. Disconnect the electrical connector from the TPS. Remove the screws that retain the TPS to the throttle body and remove the TPS. Installation is the reverse of removal. Tighten the TPS mounting screws securely. 2006 AND LATER MODELS: Disconnect the crankcase vent tube from the air cleaner. Remove the air cleaner. Remove the four bolts and the pedestal that locates the air cleaner outlet pipe over the throttle body. Disconnect the connector at the TPS. The TPS on these models is attached to the throttle body with adhesive on the screws. Use a heat gun (no more than 1,100 watts) for three minutes at a distance of 1 inch from the sensor. If you have access to a hand-held infrared temperature reader, stop using the heat gun when the screw area reaches 130 degrees F. Use hand tools to remove the screws. On later models with adhesive screws, the TPS and the screws cannot be reused. They must be replaced. Align the plastic tab on the new TPS with the notch or hole at the throttle body, then install the screws to 27 in-lbs. The remainder of the installation is the reverse of removal.

    Q:
How to troubleshoot the Throttle Position Sensor (TPS) on Ford Explorer Sport Trac? Posted by Customer
    A:
Before deciding that sensor failure has occurred, it is necessary to inspect wiring problems when troubleshooting the Throttle Position Sensor (TPS). The TPS is a potentiometer on the throttle body that sends throttle position to the PCM through a voltage signal. Surging or stalling may result from a faulty TPS. To test the TPS, disconnect the sensor and check the reference voltage, which should be around 5.0 volts with the ignition On and the engine off. Reconnect the sensor and measure the signal voltage, which should be 0.5 to 1.5 volts at closed throttle and increase steadily to 4.0 to 5.0 volts at wide-open throttle. Ensure that when closed, the meter reads less than 1.5 volts, and when fully open it gives about 5.0 volts reading on the multimeter display. There can be a need for advanced tests if those issues continue happening in your car engine system or have some effect on vehicle performance. Remove the snow shield (on 2001 and later models) to replace the non-adjustable TPS. Then, disconnect the electrical connector before firmly attaching the new sensor on the throttle body.

    Q:
How do you handle the removal and installation of the fuel pressure regulator for the 2010 Ford Crown Victoria? Posted by Customer
    A:
Relieve fuel system pressure, disconnect the battery cable, and detach the vacuum hose from the regulator. On 4.6L engines, remove the fuel rail bolts to access the regulator mounting bolts. Remove the regulator, replace its O-rings, lubricate them with oil before installation.

    Q:
How do you proceed with the removal of the throttle body on the 2002 Mercury Grand Marquis? Posted by Customer
    A:
Begin by detaching the negative battery cable and disconnecting the throttle position sensor and throttle air bypass valve electrical connectors. Disconnect the accelerator cable, Throttle Valve (TV) cable (if equipped), and the PCV vent closure hose (if present). Remove the four throttle body mounting nuts, and on 5.0L engines, carefully separate the throttle body from the EGR spacer, discarding the gasket for 5.0L engines.
