To change the oil pump, the oil pan and the baffle should be detached, the bolts that hold the oil pump should be loosened and the oil pump pulled up off the engine. Subsequently, pull out the oil pump intermediate driveshaft where two ends are of different shape and the retainer ring location has to be observed. Following that, you will have to unscrew the inlet tube and screen from the oil pump. During installation, it is requisite to pour a moderate amount of fresh clean engine oil into one of the oil pump ports and then manually turn the oil pump drive to achieve priming of the pump. Place the oil pump pick-up tube with a new gasket and fit the intermediate drive shaft into the position with the pointed end forward having correct position of the retaining ring. Place the oil pump onto the engine block and fit a new gasket if necessary, then fasten the oil pump bolts, torque set accordingly. The rest of the steps are in reverse order to the removal steps. Last, turn on the engine; observe that the oil pressure reading comes up to normal; if it does not rise to normal, shut down the engine right away because low oil pressure may harm the engine catastrophically.

Make sure the pump driveshaft is mated with the shaft inside the pump.

The remainder of the installation is the reverse of the removal process.

Remove the oil pan.

Pour 8 ounces of engine oil into the inlet passage to prime the oil pump.

Remove the engine from the vehicle (see Part F of this Chapter).

Insert the intermediate drive shaft into the engine, pointed end first, until it engages the oil pump drive. Make sure the travel limit clip is in place, and closer to the camshaft position sensor end. It fits tightly on a non-machined section of the driveshaft.

Installation is the reverse of removal, noting the following points: a) Replace all gaskets with new ones. b) Torque the oil pump mounting bolts to specification while using a criss-cross pattern. c) After installing the engine, refill the crankcase with oil and the cooling system with the proper type and mixture of antifreeze. d) Be certain to check for any oil warning lights in the instrument panel after the vehicle has been started and idling.

The first step in the installation process is to fill one of the pump ports with clean engine oil and rotate the pump by hand to prime it.

The pump should be positioned on the engine with the hex in the upper end of the driveshaft aligned with the lower end of the distributor or camshaft position sensor shaft.

Refill the engine with the proper quantity and grade of oil, then start the engine and ensure the oil pressure comes up. If it doesn't come up within 10 or 15 seconds, shut off the engine immediately and find the cause of the problem. Continued running of the engine without oil pressure will severely damage the moving parts.

Remove the oil pump pick-up tube mounting bolts (and the two bolts to detach the oil pick-up tube).

Pull the oil pump intermediate driveshaft out of the engine.
