A water pump that needs replacement shows signs through noise and leakage. Visually check for leakage around the front pump seal and drain hole. Check the front bearing for roughness or looseness by removing the drive belt and testing for movement. Check the sealing surfaces for signs of leakage. If any of these signs are present, replace the water pump.

First of all, the cooling system has to be drained, and several components such as air cleaner assembly, fan or fan clutch assembly, drive belt, and water pump pulley need to be removed. In the case of fuel-injected models, the cooling system should be drained and then release the fan or fan clutch assembly, release the drive belt, and remove brackets and accessories that hold onto the water pump bolts. Also, disconnect hoses, remove bolts, and take out the water pump for replacement. During installation apply RTV sealant to new gaskets carefully positioning them and tightening bolts.

The sealing surfaces where the water pump mates to the front cover or to the cylinder block on inline six-cylinder engines.

The hoses should be disconnected, the retaining bolts should be removed, and the water pump should be extracted. The gasket should be removed and the surface should be cleaned.
