Engine overheating from damaged water pump is avoided by the water pump. A good way to find out if it is working is to check if it leaks and feel for shaft wear or listen for howling sounds. The replacement of the water pump should be done in the case when this happens. Disconnect the battery, drain the cooling system, and remove the drive belt, water pump pulley, and bolts for 2001 and later 2.3L engines. Draw out the water pump which will be replaced, and grease the O-ring seal on it before fitting it in place. For other models, disconnect the battery, drain the cooling system, remove the cooling fan, shroud, hoses, drive belt, and pulley. Outwardly time belt cover has to be taken away from four-cylinder SOHC engines. If necessary you may have to take out the alternator and its support bracket on V6 engines manufactured up to 2010. Undo and detach the water pump from surfaces with RTV sealant or high-temperature silicone adhesive then carefully install a new one along with a gasket on these surfaces.

There are two methods. First, inspect the weep or vent holes on the water pump for coolant leakage. Second, listen for a howling sound from the front of the engine while it's running and feel for shaft wear by rocking the water pump pulley up and down.
