    Q:
What is the purpose of the Vehicle/Output Shaft Speed Sensor and Neutral Safety Switch on Ford Focus? Posted by Customer
    A:
The Focus includes an electronic speedometer which uses a sensor that has to be fitted in the transaxle rather than using the older mechanical three-gear type. This is a speed sensing unit, and it sends its speed signals to the instrument cluster, together with the engine management PCM; the PCM uses the information for fuel system controls and transaxle gear shift indications. Fitting and removal of the speed sensor is easier from beneath, but before you do so: engage the parking brake, loosen the nuts on the left-front wheel, jack up the car and support it on stands. This part can be reached at the rear of the transaxle after pulling off the left-hand front wheel and the fenderwell liner. To remove the sensor the wiring plug should be disconnected and a container should be placed under the transaxle to capture any spilled fluid; the securing bolt should then be unscrewed and the sensor pulled out. The state of the O-ring seal should be examined and, if the seal is worn or damaged, it should be replaced. The process includes the overturning of the removal process, cleaning of the sensor place, and light oiling before putting the transaxle fluid level. The transaxle range sensor is used as an electro mechanical switch to inform the EEC-V module of the shifting position hence control the transaxle depending on the gear selected. Some parts need tool 307415 to come off in the correct manner, if not available alignment marks should be made. Visually, access is at the bottom, when the parking brake is set and the car is standing on supports. The selector cable end fitting maybe removed by prying the connector, wiring plug should be disconnected and the lever retaining bolt unscrewed while the lever is held from turning by any means. Once alignment points have been made, the sensor could be detached and washed or can be replaced by another sensor for the next alignment it is important that the marks made earlier are scribed through to the new sensor. It should be precisousel with the special tool at demounting before installing it to set and tighten the bolts of the retaining and the cable of selector. The turbine shaft speed sensor is installed on top of the transaxle and operates in the same way as the output shaft speed sensor: it sends signals for gearchanging and the control of the TOR-quad lock-up. The brake pedal position switch informs the PCM to release the torque converter lock up and enables changing of the selector lever from the 'P' position during the engine start. For the 2005+ models the brake pedal shift interlock actuator which is a component for the system for locking the selector lever in 'P' position when ignition key is turned off cannot be replaced separately and the whole shift assembly has to be replaced. The actuator pushrod can only be accessed by taking out the selector knob and the procedure of installation is the exact opposite of the removal process. The selector lever shift interlock solenoid is situated on the base of the selector lever, which is why the centre console must be taken out to arrive at it. Finally, the transaxle fluid temperature sensor is located together with solenoid valves in the fluid pan; the PCM receives signals for torque converter lock-up and overdrive gear selection from it and any failure requires dealer attention as no repair procedure is recommended by the manufacturer.
