First of all, grease is applied to the drive shaft and the drive axle. The slip yokes on the right front axle and the driveshaft are greased at all times. However, to do so you will also have to remove all of them completely including the whole drive axles and every driveshaft.

Raise the vehicle and support it securely on jackstands. Place the transmission in Neutral with the parking brake off.

The universal joints must be replaced if problems develop, and the driveshaft(s) must be removed from the vehicle for this procedure.

On models with a slip yoke at the front of the driveshaft, an oil seal is used to prevent leakage of fluid and to keep dirt and contaminants from entering the transmission. If leakage is evident at the front of the driveshaft, the oil seal should be replaced following the appropriate procedures.

Installation is the reverse of removal with the following additions: a) Lubricate the slip yoke splines with chassis grease. b) Inspect the housing seal for damage and replace it if necessary. c) Do not allow the driveshaft slip yoke to bottom out on the output shaft. d) Ensure that the center bearing bracket is aligned at right angles or "square" with the driveshaft. If there were spacers under the bracket, install them again. e) Line up the paint marks on the rear yoke and the rear axle companion flange. f) Tighten all fasteners to the torques.
