    Q:
What is a driveshaft for the 2003 Ford Ranger? Posted by Customer
    A:
The driveshaft is a tube running between the transfer case or transmission and the rear axle or front axle. Universal joints are located at either end of the driveshaft(s) and permit power to be transmitted to the rear (and, on 4WD models, the front) wheels at varying angles. On long wheelbase models, the driveshaft is actually two shafts connected by a universal joint and supported in the middle by a bearing attached to the frame.

    Q:
How should the front driveshaft be reinstalled for the 2005 Ford Ranger? Posted by Customer
    A:
Installation is the reverse of the removal steps with the following additions: a) Raise the front of the driveshaft into position, checking to ensure the marks are in alignment. If not, make sure the transmission is still in Neutral, then turn the front wheels to line up the marks. b) Remove the tape securing the bearing cups and install the straps and bolts. Tighten the bolts to the torque. c) On 2011 models, tighten the driveshaft-to-transfer case bolts in a crisscross pattern, to the torque.

    A:
Installation is the reverse of the removal steps with the following additions: On 2WD models, slide the front of the driveshaft into the transmission. If not, make sure the transmission is still in Neutral, then turn the rear wheels to match the pinion flange and the driveshaft.
