U-joints are responsible for transferring the torque from the transmission to the rear differential on a driveshaft. Single-cardan, double-cardan, and constant velocity are the three kinds of U-joints. In some car models, two halves comprise the drive shaft, with a support bearing in between them. At the back part, there is a splined yoke joining the rear driveshaft to the transmission while at the front end, there is a slip yoke on both the front driveshaft and rear half of a two-piece driveshaft. To prevent leakage and dirt entry, an oil seal is used. The driveshaft requires little service although factory U-joints should be replaced if any problems arise with them. It is important to keep clean and balance your driveshaft.
