Loosen the wheel lug nuts, raise the vehicle, and support it securely on jackstands. Remove the wheel(s).

Install the splash shield and the spindle on the steering knuckle, then install and tighten the spindle nuts to the specified torque.

Installation is otherwise the reverse of removal.

The following noises are commonly associated with rear axle diagnosis: Road noise: Often mistaken for mechanical faults; it remains the same under power or coasting and can be tested by driving on different surfaces. Tire noise: Sometimes mistaken for mechanical problems; worn or low-pressure tires can emit vibrations and noises that remain consistent during varying driving situations. Engine and transmission noise: Can be deceiving as it travels along the driveline. To isolate these noises, note the engine speed at which the noise is most pronounced, then stop the vehicle, place the transmission in Neutral, and run the engine to the same speed. If the noise is the same, the rear axle is not at fault.

Remove the U-bolt nuts that secure the shock mounting bracket to the axle. Do not remove the lower shock absorber bolt. Lower the bracket away from the spring, then remove the U-bolts.

An axle bearing driver tool or a large socket that matches the outer bearing race.

Tilt the driver's side of the axle housing down, lower the axle, move it toward the driver's side, and remove it from beneath the vehicle.

A thorough check should be performed before assuming a rear axle problem because many times a problem suspected in the rear axle area may actually lie elsewhere.

The remainder of the procedure is the same as that for the driveshaft universal joints, which involves positioning sockets in a vise to push the bearings out of the joint.
