The Brake Transmission Shift Interlock (BTSI) system, is a solenoid which is mounted behind the clock spring on the steering column or under the shift lever in the center console as needed for the vehicle; its function is to lock the shift lever in PARK when the key is turned to LOCK or ACCESSORY. If the ignition key is in the RUN position, then magnetic holding device is provided there and the shift lever can be unlocked only when the brake pedal is pressed. The system also disables rotational movement of the Ignition key to the LOCK or the ACCESSORY position without the shift lever in PARK. It is required to check that the ignition key can be turned back to the LOCK position only when the shift lever is in PARK: when the shift lever is in PARK, the key should be turned from OFF to LOCK, and when in any other position-should not rotate from LOCK. The shift lever must be in PARK position when the ignition key is with OFF, RUN, or START positions and cannot shift out of PARK with the key in ACC or LOCK positions. After the key is moved to the RUN position, the shift lever can be manipulated to select the various gears without application of the brake pedal. For solenoid replacement, stick the shift lever to the Neutral position and remove the battery negative terminal. For a steering column-mounted shifter, take off the lower trim panel, knee bolster, steering column shields, steering wheel and clock spring, then disconnect the BTSI electrical connector and get rid of the solenoid. If the shifter is for a center console, then delete the manual shift lever, the overdrive cancel button, and the BTSI electrical connector, then remove the solenoid. Removal is in a way done in the opposite manner to installation. In case of BTSI system failure, one can shift the car manually by depressing an override button below the steering column or by the side of the BTSI solenoid in the centre console to NEUTRAL.
