To remove the left-side leaf spring, the gas tank needs to be lowered. For the right-side spring removal, the muffler must be removed. Start by loosening the rear wheel lug nuts and raising the rear of the vehicle. Support it securely on jackstands placed under the frame rails and block the front wheels. Remove the wheel. If removing the right spring, remove the muffler. If removing the left spring, lower the gas tank. Support the axle with a floor jack placed under the axle tube and raise it slightly to take the weight of the axle. Remove the rear shock lower fasteners. Remove the nuts from the U-bolts, then remove the U-bolts and the spring plate from the spring. Lower the jack enough to relieve tension on the spring. Note the position of the spacer between the axle and the spring on 4WD models. Remove the lower bolt and nut securing the shackle assembly to the frame bracket at the rear of the spring. Remove the spring hanger bolt and nut at the front of the spring. Remove the spring. Inspect the spring eye bushings for wear or distortion and have them replaced if necessary. To install the spring, start by placing it in the front bracket and tightening the bolt and nut finger-tight. Place the spring shackle in the frame bracket and install the bolt and nut, tightening them finger-tight. Raise the axle into contact with the spring, ensuring correct positioning. Install the U-bolts and nuts and tighten them. Make sure the spacer between the axle and the spring is in its original position on 4WD models. Install the wheel and lug nuts. Lower the vehicle to the ground and tighten the spring bracket bolt and nut and shackle-to-frame bracket bolt and nut.
