On 2001 and later models with 2.3L engines, remove the left front inner splash shield to access the starter. Disconnect the battery cable from the negative terminal. Raise and secure the vehicle on jackstands. Remove protective covers from the starter terminals if present. Disconnect the wiring from the starter terminals. Remove the starter mounting bolts and detach the starter from the engine. Installation is the reverse of removal. Replace starter solenoid terminal protective caps if needed.

When troubleshooting starting circuit issues, don't immediately assume it's the starter. Instead, check battery cable clamps for cleanliness and tightness, assess cable condition, test the battery, and ensure starter mounting bolts are tight. Also, verify the Digital Transmission Range sensor or Clutch Pedal Position switch are adjusted correctly. Check the starter relay, especially in newer models where it's in the engine compartment fuse and relay box. If the starter spins but the engine doesn't turn over, the drive assembly may be slipping and require replacement. If the starter doesn't work despite the relay clicking, check the battery, relay contacts, solenoid, or electrical connections. For a discharged battery, check the relay circuit or replace it. For early models, examine the relay circuit, test it with a jumper wire, and assess contacts. Slow cranking may be due to a seized engine, incorrect oil, or battery/terminal issues, so inspect and potentially replace.

Before assuming the starter is the problem, the following items should be checked in the starting circuit:1. Ensure that the battery cable clamps are clean and tightly connected to the battery.2. Inspect the condition of the battery cables and replace any damaged ones.3. Test the battery to determine if it needs to be replaced.4. Check the tightness of the starter mounting bolts.5. Verify the adjustment of the Digital Transmission Range sensor or Clutch Pedal Position switch and ensure that the shift lever is in the correct position.6. Check the operation of the starter relay, which is located in the engine compartment fuse and relay box on later models.
