Q:
What are some troubleshooting steps for diagnosing starter problems on Ford Explorer Sport Trac? Posted by Customer
A:
Before diagnosing starter problems, make sure the battery is fully charged. If the starter doesn't turn at all when the switch is operated, make sure the shift lever is in Neutral or Park. Make sure the battery is charged and that all cables at the battery and starter solenoid terminals are secure. If the starter spins but the engine doesn't turn over, then the drive assembly in the starter is slipping and the starter must be replaced. If, when the switch is actuated, the starter doesn't operate at all but the starter solenoid operates (clicks), then the problem lies with either the battery, the starter solenoid contacts or the starter connections. If the starter relay doesn't click when the ignition switch is actuated, a discharged battery is the most likely cause. If the battery is fully charged, the starter relay circuit may be open or the relay itself could be defective. Check the starter relay circuit or replace the relay. To check the starter relay circuit, remove the push-on electrical connector from the relay. Make sure that the connection is clean and secure and the relay bracket is grounded. If the connections are good, check the operation of the relay with a jumper wire. To do this, place the transmission in Park (automatic) or Neutral (manual) and apply the parking brake. Connect a jumper wire between the battery positive terminal and the relay main terminal (BAT side) on the starter relay. If the starter now operates, the starter relay is okay. The problem is in the ignition switch, Neutral start switch, starter/clutch switch, or in the starting circuit wiring (look for open or loose connections). Reconnect the push-on electrical connector. If the starter still doesn't operate, replace the starter solenoid. If the starter cranks the engine at an abnormally slow speed, first make sure the battery is fully charged and all terminal connections are clean and tight. Also check the connections at the starter solenoid and battery ground. Eyelet terminals should not be easily rotated by hand. Also check for a short to ground. If the engine is partially seized, or has the wrong viscosity oil in it, it will crank slowly.

Q:
How do you remove and install a starter motor on a Ford Explorer Sport Trac? Posted by Customer
A:
Detach the cable from the negative terminal of the battery. On 2004 and later models, unbolt the frame-vibration damper, which looks like a small dumbbell, for starter access. Raise the vehicle and support it securely on jackstands. Remove the starter solenoid cover if equipped. Disconnect the large cable from the terminal on the starter and the solenoid terminal connections. Remove the starter mounting bolt and nut, remove the electrical connectors, the upper mounting bolt and the lower mounting nut, then detach the starter from the transmission bellhousing and detach the starter from the engine. Installation is the reverse of removal.
