An oil mist is created when the crankcase is agitated by oil during engine operation. Positive Crankcase Ventilation (PCV) relieves pressure by venting vapors and gases into the intake manifold for combustion. The PCV valve has a mode of ventilation that allows small quantities to pass through at stop and large volumes under a higher load. An air filter is used to provide clean air which goes to the valve cover or can be connected via a dedicated hose. Such PCV systems are always equipped with a PCV valve, situated in the intake manifold or on top of the cylinder head cover, joining the two inlet manifolds using a vacuum hose. The PCV valve ensures optimal engine performance and emission control by regulating airflow and gas flow into the intake manifold.

To maintain efficient operation of the PCV system, clean hoses and check PCV valve and filter as specified in maintenance schedule. Check PCV valve rubber grommet for damage and replace if necessary. Shake valve to check for rattling, replace if clogged. Transfer elbow from original valve or soak new elbow in warm water before installation. Inspect hoses for blockage and remove and check PCV system filter. Replace filter if dirty. Reconnect hoses to system.

First of all, a crankcase emission control system comprises of a PCV valve, sealed oil filler cap, and connecting hoses. This keeps engine oil from getting contaminated or polluting the environment by redirecting combustion gases back into the combustion chamber. To ascertain that the gas flow is regulated and unhindered, check for blockage and damage in the PCV valve. To take off or replace it, you should take it away from the rocker cover grommet, remove it from the hose pipe, clean if necessary, and put it back in place.

The PCV valve rubber grommet in the rocker arm cover should be checked for cracks and distortion. If it's damaged, it should be replaced.

The PCV system directs vapors and blow-by gases from the crankcase into the intake manifold, where they mix with the air/fuel charge and undergo combustion.

The PCV valve should be replaced at least once a year.
