The PCV system reduces emissions by scavenging crankcase vapors. Fresh air from the air cleaner mixes with blow-by gases in the crankcase and is rerouted through a PCV valve to the intake manifold. The system includes a replaceable valve, a ventilation filter, and connecting hoses. The valve restricts flow for idle quality. Excessive blow-by gases can flow back into the air cleaner for combustion. Checking and replacing the valve and filter is covered.

The PCV valve plays a role in maintaining idle quality by restricting the flow when the intake manifold vacuum is high.

The PCV system works by circulating fresh air from the air cleaner through the crankcase, where it mixes with blow-by gases. It then reroutes this mixture through a PCV valve to the intake manifold.

The location of the PCV valve depends on the engine model. It can be found in the valve cover near the brake booster for 2001 and earlier models with 3.0L and 4.0L engines, inside the oil separator on the left side for SOHC four-cylinder engines, and behind the camshaft cover for 2004 and later 3.0L and 4.0L engines.

On DOHC four-cylinder engines, you need to remove the driver's side inner fenderwell splash shield to access the PCV valve.

The PCV valve is typically mounted in the valve cover near the brake booster.
