    Q:
How to inspect the Rod Bearing on Lincoln Mark VII? Posted by Customer
    A:
For an engine overhaul, it is recommended to replace the main and connecting rod bearings with new ones. Addressing the cause of bearing failure is essential before assembling the engine to prevent its recurrence. When inspecting bearings, take them off from the engine block, main bearing caps, connecting rods and rod caps, arranging them in a corresponding position. The foreign materials can be embedded into the bearing material causing damage to it. Lack of lubrication which arises from causes like excessive heat, overload, oil leakage or blockage of oil passages may lead to material breakdown of bearings.

    Q:
What should be considered when examining and replacing Rod Bearing during an overhaul on Ford Explorer? Posted by Customer
    A:
When an engine is overhauled, it is advisable to fit new main and connecting rod bearings, while retaining the old ones for analysis, to deduce the state of the engine. The main root causes of bearing failure include, inadequate lubrication, dirt contamination, overloading of the engine and corrosion and all these root causes must be remedial before any reassembly is made to avoid repetition. When inspecting bearings they are withdrawn from their appropriate place and placed on a flat surface with a view of matching the defects with the crankshaft journal. Contaminants are brought into the engine during assembly or even through the filters, as well as during the machining processes, and our experiences show that such contaminants get lodged on the bearing surfaces and thereby create scores or gouges on the bearing material. To avoid such a failure, it is essential to clean every part carefully always change the oil and the filter frequently. This arises from one of the following causes: heat, overloading, leaking of oil and blocked passages and as a result can cause severe damage where the bearing material is entirely wiped off. Again, habits in driving are antonymous with bearing durability; for instance, in luging the engine or in short trips, there can be overload and corrosion respectively. Further, substandard mounting of bearings also provokes a lack of supplies of oil and high areas associated with failure.

    Q:
How do dirt and other foreign particles get into the engine for the 1999 Ford Ranger? Posted by Customer
    A:
Dirt and other foreign particles can get into the engine in a variety of ways. They may be left in the engine during assembly, pass through filters or the PCV system, get into the oil, and from there into the bearings. Metal chips from machining operations and normal engine wear are often present. Abrasives are sometimes left in engine components after reconditioning, especially when parts are not thoroughly cleaned using the proper cleaning methods.

    Q:
What are the interrelated causes of lubrication breakdown for the 1989 Ford Thunderbird? Posted by Customer
    A:
Excessive heat (which thins the oil), overloading (which squeezes the oil from the bearing face), and oil leakage or throw off (from excessive bearing clearances, worn oil pump, or high engine speeds) all contribute to lubrication breakdown. Blocked oil passages, usually the result of misaligned oil holes in a bearing shell, will also oil starve a bearing and destroy it.

    Q:
Should old bearings be kept during an engine overhaul for the 2010 Ford Ranger? Posted by Customer
    A:
Yes, even though the main and connecting rod bearings should be replaced with new ones, the old bearings should be retained for close examination, as they may reveal valuable information about the condition of the engine.

    Q:
How do dirt and other foreign particles get into the engine for the 2009 Mercury Grand Marquis? Posted by Customer
    A:
Dirt and other foreign particles get into the engine in a variety of ways. It may be left in the engine during assembly, or it may pass through filters or the PCV system. It may get into the oil, and from there into the bearings. Metal chips from machining operations and normal engine wear are often present. Abrasives are sometimes left in engine components after reconditioning, especially when parts are not thoroughly cleaned using the proper cleaning methods. Whatever the source, these foreign objects often end up embedded in the soft bearing material and are easily recognized. Large particles will not embed in the bearing and will score or gouge the bearing and journal. The best prevention for this cause of bearing failure is to clean all parts thoroughly and keep everything spotlessly clean during engine assembly. Frequent and regular engine oil and filter changes are also recommended.
