1. Clean the bearing surfaces and camshaft journals. 2. Lay the camshaft(s) in place without installing rocker arms or lubrication. 3. Place a strip of Plastigage on each journal and install the camshaft bearing caps. 4. Tighten the cap bolts gradually, then remove the caps and compare the width of the crushed Plastigage to the scale on the envelope.

Clean the camshafts with solvent and inspect the bearing journals for uneven wear and pitting.

Rotate the crankshaft counterclockwise and position the keyway in the 9 o'clock position (neutral position).

4. Remove the camshaft sprockets, locking the camshaft in position with a special tool before loosening the sprocket bolt. CAUTION: Don't mix up the sprockets; make an identification mark on each sprocket using paint for correct reassembly. 5. Mark the camshaft cap clusters with front and rear indications for both the left and right cylinder heads. 6. Loosen the bearing cap bolts only 1/4-turn at a time, following the reverse of the tightening sequence, until they can be removed by hand. 7. Remove the caps and lift the camshaft off the cylinder head, tapping lightly under the camshaft caps if necessary. 8. Repeat this procedure for the remaining camshaft.

After measuring the cam lobe lift, record the figure for future reference, reposition the piston at TDC on the compression stroke, and repeat the check for each valve, ensuring to work from cylinder to cylinder following the firing order sequence.
