    Q:
How to remove and install tie-rods and tie-rod ends on Ford Excursion? Posted by Customer
    A:
For the drag-link to be removed, the front part of the car should be lifted, and place on jack stand, rear wheels should be blocked and the parking brake should engage and the wheels should be aligned. Afterward fasten the draglink to tighten by the removal of the cotter pins in the nut end at both ends. With the utilisation of a Pitman arm puller, pull off the drag link from the Pitman arm and the tie-rod for 4WD models or the steering knuckle for 2WD models, then unscrew and detach the ballstuds. If replacement of the drag link end is necessary, then weaken the clamp bolts of the tie-rod adjusting sleeve and turn the drag link end, then count the number of turns. For installation, reverse the removal procedures; make certain that the ballstuds are locked in place to prevent rotation as the nuts are tightened to the prescribed torque; new cotter pins with ends bent should be used. If you have removed the tie-rod adjusting sleeve, then now is the time to tighten its clamp bolts, and also adjust the front end alignment if needed. Regarding tie-rod/tie-rod end, firstly, one has to open the bonnet, and loosen the front wheel lug nuts of the side to be serviced, then has to jack up the car and support it on an axle stand, set the rear wheels of the car tightly on the ground and remove the front wheel. Take out the cotter pin and unscrew the nut that is on the stud of the tie-rod end Discard the cotter pin. Another way is to use a puller to remove the tie-rod end from the steering knuckle and of the drag link in the case of 4WD to the other end of the tie-rod as well. In case of replacement of a tie-rod end, slacken clamp bolts on the tie-rod adjusting sleeve and withdraw the tie-rod end with the count of turns. Lastly for installation, the process should be the reversed of the removal process, make sure the ballstuds seat well, fit the wheel, and the lug nuts, lower the car, tighten the lug nuts and check for adjustments on the front end alignment.
