    Q:
How to inspect the upper and lower balljoints for looseness on Ford F-150? Posted by Customer
    A:
Check the ball joints for looseness whenever the vehicle is raised. Inspect the ball joints and their seals for damage when the vehicle is on jack stands. If a seal is damaged, replace the ball joint. To test the upper ball joint, try to move the upper control arm near the ball joint up and down. If there's play, replace the ball joint.

    Q:
How to inspect and replace control arm balljoints on Lincoln Navigator? Posted by Customer
    A:
Inspect control arm balljoints for looseness when separated from the steering knuckle. Check if the ballstud can be turned by hand. Replace any loose or easily turned balljoints. To check balljoints with suspension assembled, turn off air suspension system if equipped. Loosen lug nuts, raise and secure vehicle on jackstands. Remove wheels. Use floor jack to slightly raise lower control arm near each balljoint. For upper balljoints, use dial indicator against wheel rim and rock tire to check deflection. For lower balljoints, use dial indicator against wheel rim and prybar between control arm and steering knuckle. If deflection exceeds 0.125-inch, replace faulty balljoint. Balljoint replacement may be possible individually. Check with auto parts store for availability. Use special removal/installer tool to detach and install balljoint. Be careful not to damage rubber boot. Attach steering knuckle to control arm.

    Q:
How can you inspect the lower ball joints, and what is the allowable deflection reading for a healthy lower ball joint for the 2009 Ford Expedition? Posted by Customer
    A:
For lower ball joints, position a dial indicator against the wheel rim and insert a pry bar between the lower control arm and the steering knuckle. As you lever the pry bar, the needle on the dial indicator should not deflect more than 0.125-inch. If it does, the lower ball joint is faulty and should be replaced.
