Regardless of whether the head was sent to an automotive repair shop for valve servicing, ensure it is clean before beginning reassembly. If the head was sent out for valve servicing, the valves and related components will already be in place. Lubricate and install the valves, then install new seals on each of the valve guides. Using a hammer and a deep socket, gently tap each seal into place until it is properly seated on the guide, avoiding twisting or cocking the seals during installation to ensure proper sealing on the valve stems. Since the intake and exhaust valves exhibit different leakage rates, the valve stem seals must not be interchanged. Install the valve spring shim(s) over the valve guide boss and set the valve spring, retainer, and sleeve in place. Compress the spring and install the keepers, ensuring they are seated properly in the valve stem grooves. Grease can be used to hold the keepers in place until the compressor is released. Check the installed valve spring height for each valve, ensuring it remains within specified limits; if not, install additional valve spring shims to achieve the correct height. Finally, install the rocker arms, fulcrums, and bolts, lubricating the fulcrums with moly base grease or engine assembly lube.

A valve spring compressor is used to compress the valve springs. After compressing them, the keepers should be removed and the springs released.

Any damaged or excessively worn parts must be replaced with new ones.

Cover the lifter valley with shop rags and use a vacuum cleaner to remove any debris that falls into the cylinders.
