All models are provided with the frontal impact airbag system called the Supplemental Restraint System-SRS is responsible for the safety of the driver and the front passenger in the event of head-on or frontal impact. The SRS is controlled by the Restraints Control Module (RCM), located on the center tunnel between the seats, and utilizes a pair of airbags: the driver's air bag is located in the steering wheel while on the passenger side is found in the right side of the instrument panel, on top of the glove box. These are the clockspring that provides battery voltage to the steering wheel air bag and air bag readiness light on the cluster. Some of the SRS components include the air bags and seat belts which have pre-tensioners, and when a crash is sensed by a vehicle, the seat belts tighten. Part of the steering wheel, the driver airbag inflator module, inflated, the bag nearly simultaneously as soon as it gets an electrical signal and the larger sized passenger airbag that utilises these components also has a textured trim cover which splits when in the process of inflating. During an impact, the RCM turns on the seat belt pre-tensioners and senses the airbag system every time the car starts, by the airbag readiness lamp. To discharge the system prior to accessing the airbags it is necessary to turn the ignition to the LOCK position, remove the negative battery terminal and wait for at least 2 minutes until the back up power supply discharges. In handling an airbag it should be placed with the opening part facing downwards and it is very improper to measure the resistance of any of the airbag interphase or getting rid of live airbag inappropriately. The precaution on passenger air bag should not be removed unless necessary, if that is the case, servicing should be done by a professional auto technician.
