The connecting rod bolts on all engines covered by this manual are "torque-to-yield" bolts and are NOT reusable. Once removed, they must be replaced with new bolts.

Corrosion indicates that coolant is leaking into the combustion chamber or the crankcase. The cause must be corrected to prevent the problem from persisting in the rebuilt engine.

If the pistons must be removed from the connecting rods, they should be taken to an automotive machine shop to check for bend and twist, as they have special equipment for this purpose. It is advised not to disassemble the pistons and connecting rods unless new parts are needed.

Tap the top edge of the ring compressor to ensure it's contacting the block around its entire circumference.

Prior to removing the piston/connecting rod assemblies, remove the cylinder head(s), the oil pan, and the oil pump (on 5.4L engines) by referring to the appropriate Sections in Chapter 2, Part A or Part B, depending on which engine is being overhauled. Additionally, on some models, there may be a sheet metal oil baffle plate attached with nuts to the main cap studs, which should also be removed.

Use your fingernail to feel if a ridge has formed at the upper limit of ring travel, which is about 1/4-inch down from the top of each cylinder. If ridges are present due to carbon deposits or cylinder wear, they must be completely removed with a special tool called a ridge reamer before attempting to remove the pistons.
