Several electrical accessories in the vehicle, such as the fuel injection system, horns, starter, and fog lamps, use relays to transmit the electrical signal to the component. Relays operate by using a low-current circuit to open and close a high-current circuit. If a relay is defective, the associated component will not function properly. Most relays are mounted in the engine compartment and interior fuse/relay boxes, with the engine compartment fuse and relay panel located on the left side of the engine compartment and the passenger compartment fuse box situated on the Smart Junction Box under the left end of the instrument panel.

Fuses are designed to break a circuit when a predetermined current is reached, in order to protect components and wiring from damage caused by excessive current flow, which is usually due to a fault in the circuit, such as a short-circuit.

If the relay contains a resistor, the resistance will be indicated on the meter and should be the same value in either direction.

If a relay fails any of the tests mentioned above, it should be replaced.

Terminal 87 is connected to the circuit leading to the component being powered. If the relay has several alternate terminals for load or ground connections, they are usually numbered 87A, 87B, 87C, and so on.

You can remove the relay and test it using the provided procedure or have it tested by a dealer service department. Defective relays cannot be repaired and must be replaced with a new unit.
