Key aspects of the fuel injection system, horns, starters and fog lamps in the vehicle use relays where a low current control circuit is used to switch on the high current power circuit required to activate the component. A defective relay will not allow the operation of the related component, and several of them are installed in the engine compartment and interior fuse/relay boxes. If there is reason to believe a relay is bad, it can be pulled and checked, by either a prescribed method or the dealer. Most relays in these vehicles are ISO relays, which have terminal numbers suggesting the circuit connections and function of the relays; there are two general terminal configurations on these relays. The control circuit of the switch is configured to the relay coil, while the other terminals are configured in the power circuit to make the coil produce a magnet which in turn switches on the power circuit electricity. More often terminal 85 and 86 constitute the control circuit with special connections when a diode or a resistor is connected. Terminal 30 terminal of the alternator is connected to the battery voltage source, while terminal 87 is connected to the ground side of the circuit. A check on continuity of the relay working through the control coil available in the circuit can be used to check on the resistance in both directions, whether 'n' and 'n+1'. Further, there should be no continuity between terminal 30 and 87 when the relay is out of phase. When the correct terminals and the battery have been shorted by the jumper wires, the relay should click and when continuity is checked for between terminals 30 and 87, there should be continuity. If any tests show failure then relay should be replaced.
