    Q:
How to replace the expansion tube and accumulator-drier in an air conditioning system on Ford Explorer? Posted by Customer
    A:
Whenever the A/C Orifice Tube is replaced, the accumulator-drier should also be replaced. Removal of the A/C Orifice Tube involves having the air conditioning system discharged and the refrigerant recovered. Disconnect the cable from the negative terminal of the battery. Disconnect the condenser-to-evaporator refrigerant line at the firewall. The A/C Orifice Tube is a tube with a fixed-diameter orifice and a mesh filter at each end. When you separate the pipe at the fitting you will see one end of the A/C Orifice Tube inside the pipe leading to the evaporator. Use a special removal tool to remove the A/C Orifice Tube. The A/C Orifice Tube acts to meter the refrigerant, changing it from high-pressure liquid to low-pressure gas. It is possible to reuse the A/C Orifice Tube if the screens aren't plugged with grit or foreign material, neither screen is torn, the plastic housing over the screens is intact, and the brass orifice inside the plastic housing is unrestricted. Installation is the reverse of removal. Be sure to insert the A/C Orifice Tube with the shorter end in first, toward the evaporator, and lubricate the refrigerant line and the A/C Orifice Tube with clean refrigerant oil to aid assembly. Retighten the fitting and refrigerant line, then have the system evacuated, recharged and leak-tested by the shop that discharged it.

    Q:
How to remove and install the orifice tube in an air conditioning system on Mercury Mountaineer? Posted by Customer
    A:
Have the air conditioning system discharged by a dealer service department or an automotive air conditioning shop before proceeding. Disconnect the fitting in the refrigerant line from the condenser to the evaporator. Use an open-end wrench on the stationary fitting and a flare nut wrench to avoid rounding off the tube nut. Remove the orifice tube from the line with a pair of needle-nose pliers. If it's stuck or breaks off, special extractor tools are available at most auto parts stores. Installation is the reverse of removal. Be sure to remove and discard the old O-rings. Take the vehicle back to the shop that discharged it. Have the system evacuated, recharged and leak tested.
