Q:
How to test and replace the antenna on Lincoln Continental? Posted by Customer
A:
On 1997 and later models, the antenna is a grid permanently bonded to the rear window and cannot be replaced conventionally. However, it can be tested and repaired following the rear window defogger grid procedure. To check the antenna, perform a resistance check between the cable and mast, ensuring a reading below five ohms. If correct, the antenna is okay; otherwise, inspect the cable and base. Check the resistance of the unplugged antenna cable, and if it exceeds five ohms, replace the cable. Similarly, check the resistance of the antenna, and if it surpasses five ohms, replace the antenna. For replacement, disconnect the cable from the negative battery terminal and, for a front-mounted antenna, lower it and remove the rear screws for access. Remove the lower antenna bolt, the nut at the top of the antenna stanchion, and then uninstall the antenna. Reverse the process for installation. For a rear-mounted antenna, lower it, open the trunk lid, remove the trim panel, and take out the lower antenna bolt. Remove the radio antenna base cap, unscrew the mounting screws, disconnect electrical connectors, and lower the antenna assembly into the trunk for removal. Reverse the steps for installation. To replace the antenna mast and drive cable, remove the retaining nut, pull the mast partway out, activate the motor until the drive cable can be removed, and note the direction of the drive teeth. Use a hacksaw to cut off the old mast, slide off the nut and tube, insert the new cable into the drive mechanism, run the motor while pushing on the cable, lower the new antenna tube and nut into place, and tighten the nut securely. Verify proper operation by activating the antenna through radio on/off cycles.
