    Q:
How to inspect and replace brake discs on Ford Fusion? Posted by Customer
    A:
Loosen the wheel lug nuts, raise the vehicle, and support it securely on jackstands. Remove the brake caliper without disconnecting the brake hose, and suspend it out of the way with a piece of wire after removing the caliper bolts. Visually inspect the disc surface for score marks and other damage; while light scratches and shallow grooves are normal, deep scoring necessitates disc removal and refinishing by an automotive machine shop. Check both sides of the disc, noting that severe wear indicates the need for replacement. If pulsating occurs during braking, suspect disc runout. To check runout, reinstall the lug nuts inverted and place a dial indicator about 1/2-inch from the outer edge of the disc, setting the indicator to zero before turning the disc. The reading should not exceed the allowable runout limit; if it does, refinishing is required. Regardless of the reading, resurfacing is recommended to ensure a smooth finish and flat surface, eliminating brake pedal pulsation. If not resurfacing, remove the glaze with emery cloth or sandpaper. Ensure the disc is not machined below the specified minimum thickness, which can be checked with a micrometer. Remove the caliper mounting bracket and lug nuts if reinstalled, then take out the screws securing the disc to the hub and remove the disc. While the disc is off, wire-brush the backside that contacts the wheel hub and clean any rust or dirt on the hub face. Apply small dots of high-temperature anti-seize around the hub's circumference and raised center portion. Position the disc over the threaded studs, install and securely tighten the retaining screws, then reinstall the caliper mounting bracket and caliper, tightening the bolts to the specified torque values. Install the wheel, lower the vehicle, and tighten the lug nuts to the torque specification. Depress the brake pedal a few times to bring the brake pads into contact with the disc; bleeding is only necessary if the brake hose was disconnected. Check the operation of the brakes carefully before driving. If new or resurfaced rear discs are installed, check and adjust the parking brake if necessary.
