To inspect and perform maintenance on your vehicle's brake system, first, loosen the wheel lug nuts, raise the vehicle, and secure it on jackstands. Remove the brake caliper without disconnecting the brake hose and suspend it out of the way using a piece of wire. Visually examine the disc surface for score marks and damage, paying attention to both sides of the disc. Light scratches and shallow grooves may not significantly affect brake performance, but deep scoring requires disc removal and refinishing by an automotive machine shop. To check for disc runout, reinstall the lug nuts (inverted) and place a dial indicator about 1/2 inch from the disc's outer edge, setting the indicator to zero before turning the disc. Ensure that the indicator reading does not exceed the allowable runout limit, and if it does, have the disc refinished. Regardless of the dial indicator reading, it's recommended to resurface the discs for a smooth finish and a perfectly flat surface. If you choose not to resurface them, remove glaze using emery cloth or sandpaper in a swirling motion. Measure the disc thickness with a micrometer to ensure it meets the specified minimum thickness. When removing the disc, also clean the backside that contacts the wheel hub, apply high-temperature anti-seize in small dots around the hub's circumference, and reassemble the components, tightening bolts to their specified torque values. Lower the vehicle, tighten the lug nuts, depress the brake pedal to engage the pads with the disc, and check brake operation before driving. If you're working on rear discs, verify the parking brake's operation and adjust it if needed. Finally, perform a thorough brake system check before resuming normal vehicle use. Note that for certain models with Electric Parking Brake (EPB), you must deactivate the system before working on the rear brakes.
