This procedure is for later model vehicles with automatic transmission. It is intended for home mechanics without access to special alignment tools. Disconnect the battery, place the shift lever in neutral, raise the vehicle, locate and disconnect the DTR sensor, remove the manual lever, mark the relationship of the DTR sensor, remove the sensor, align the neutral marks, slide the sensor onto the lever shaft, tighten the bolts, and recheck alignment. Drive to a dealer if necessary.

To remove the shift range selector switch, initially, remove the knob from the switch and disconnect the electrical connection. Then, the two mounting screws are unscrewed and one can take the switch out of the dash. For its installation, the process should be done in the reverse of what has been listed above for its removal. Further, you have to use a screwdriver or panel tool to remove the switch from the instrument panel, to remove the second connector and to take out the switch. Last, after the scanning is done, reverse the steps you have done in the removal section.

The DTR sensor, located at the manual lever on the left side of the transmission, is accessed by peeling back the rubber boot and disconnecting the electrical connector.

This procedure applies only to 1993 and 1994 Models with the A4LD transmission.

Remove the shift range selector switch.

Remove the jackstands and lower the vehicle. If the vehicle is equipped with air suspension, reactivate the air suspension system by turning on the switch.

Raise and support the front of the vehicle securely on jack stands. Caution: If the vehicle is equipped with Automatic Ride Control (ARC), make sure the air suspension switch is turned to the OFF position before the vehicle is raised to prevent damage to the system components.

The TR sensor is mounted on the automatic transmission and senses the position of the gear selector as chosen by the driver.

To disconnect the electrical connector from the DTR sensor, depress the release tab and pull off the connector.
