    Q:
What is the purpose of a driveshaft, and where are universal joints typically used in the driveshaft assembly for the 2001 Lincoln Navigator? Posted by Customer
    A:
A driveshaft is a tube or a pair of tubes that transfers power between the transmission and the rear axle's differential. Universal joints, also known as U-joints, are used at both ends of all driveshafts and behind the center bearing on two-piece rear driveshafts.

    Q:
What steps should be followed when removing the rear driveshaft, and what components need to be addressed during removal for the 2000 Lincoln Navigator? Posted by Customer
    A:
Mark the relationship between the driveshaft and the differential pinion flange. Remove the rear universal joint bolts. If applicable, remove the center bearing support bracket bolts on two-piece driveshafts. Lower the rear driveshaft. Slide out the slip yoke from the transmission or transfer case. Remove the driveshaft assembly while protecting the extension housing with a plastic bag. While the driveshaft is removed, inspect and replace the extension housing seal and differential pinion seal if necessary.
