Q:
How do you remove and install the rear coil spring in a Lincoln MKX? Posted by Customer
A:
To remove and replace the rear coil spring in a vehicle, start by loosening the wheel lug nuts, raising the vehicle, and securely supporting it on jack stands while ensuring the front wheels are blocked to prevent rolling. Remove the wheel for access to the suspension components. For 2010 and earlier models, follow the removal steps, which include removing the brake caliper, brake disc, brake cable bracket, stabilizer bar link, and wheel speed sensor. On all-wheel drive models, remove the inner and outer drive axle/hub nuts and separate the drive axle from the hub and bearing using a drive hub remover. Place a floor jack under the lower arm, remove the shock absorber nut and bolt, and then remove fasteners from the outboard upper arm, outboard toe link, outboard lower arm, and the lower shock mount. For all-wheel drive models, pull out the drive axle, lower the jack while pulling out on the knuckle, and remove the coil spring. Inspect the spring for defects and check the upper and lower seats for damage. During installation, ensure the lower seat is correctly positioned, place the spring with the lower end no more than 0.39 inches away from the step in the lower spring seat, and raise the jack to secure the components. In all-wheel drive models, place the drive axle back into the hub, seat it, and tighten the nuts to the specified torque. Finish the installation by tightening the fasteners in the specified order. For 2011 and later models, support the lower control arm with a floor jack, remove the rear knuckle, lower the jack to extend the coil spring fully, and remove the spring. Inspect and replace any defective components before reinstalling the spring and the rear knuckle. The remainder of the installation is the reverse of the removal process. Finally, have the rear wheel alignment checked and adjusted as needed.
