    Q:
How to replace the fixed orifice tube in air conditioning systems on Lincoln Town Car? Posted by Customer
    A:
This information applies only to air conditioning on 1980 through 1995 models, which use an accumulator/drier with a fixed orifice tube. Have the system discharged by a dealer service department or an automotive air conditioning repair facility. Disconnect the cable at the negative battery terminal. Disconnect the liquid line from the evaporator core at the accumulator/drier. Pour a small amount of refrigerant oil into the evaporator core tube to lubricate the O-rings seals on the orifice tube during removal. Using the special tool, engage the tool on the fixed orifice tube and remove it from the liquid refrigerant line. Caution: DON'T try to remove or install the fixed orifice tube with anything except the special tool. To try to remove any other way will break the fixed orifice tube inside the evaporator core tube, and may require the replacement of the evaporator core. Cap or plug the open refrigerant lines immediately to prevent any dirt or excessive moisture from entering the system. Lubricate the O-rings on the new fixed orifice tube with clean refrigerant oil. Place the new fixed orifice tube into the special tool (the same tool is used for removal and installation) and insert it into the evaporator core tube until the orifice tube is seated at the stop. Remove the tool. Replace the O-ring at the refrigerant line spring lock coupling. Reconnect the refrigerant lines. Have the system evacuated, recharged and leak tested by a dealer service department or an air conditioning repair facility.

    Q:
What is the location and function of the orifice tube and A/C Expansion Valve in the air conditioning system on Mercury Mariner? Posted by Customer
    A:
The orifice tube, located in the condenser to evaporator line, changes high pressure liquid refrigerant into low pressure. Before working on the air conditioning system, have it discharged by a professional. For 2007 and earlier models, disconnect the refrigerant line from the condenser to the evaporator, remove the protective cover, release the coupler with a special tool, and use pliers to remove the orifice tube. Discard old O-rings when installing a new tube. For 2008 and later models, remove the expansion valve by detaching the nut from the refrigerant line fittings, removing the block and lines, and discarding the seals. Remove the expansion valve and discard the O-rings. Replace seals and O-rings when reinstalling, and have the system evacuated, recharged, and tested by a professional.

    Q:
What is the purpose and how to replace a plugged fixed orifice tube in an air conditioning system on Mercury Grand Marquis? Posted by Customer
    A:
Restriction of the flow of liquid refrigerant into the evaporator core is done by the fixed orifice tube assembly. The evaporator temperature is controlled by a pressure-operated electric switch. In cases where high pressure is extremely high and the low pressure is nearly a vacuum, then the fixed orifice tube is blocked and it needs to be replaced. To take it out, disconnect the liquid line connection, lubricate the O-rings, use a special tool to extract the tube, and cap an open line.
