Q:
How to timing chain inspection and removal with the cover on Lincoln Town Car Overhead valve (OHV)engines? Posted by Customer
A:
For timing chain inspection with the cover on the engine, start by disconnecting the battery cable and setting the number one cylinder at Top Dead Center (TDC) on the compression stroke. Rotate the crankshaft 360-degrees, placing the timing indicator before TDC. Remove the right side valve cover and attach a dial indicator to measure timing chain deflection. Turn the crankshaft to TDC, zero the dial indicator, and note any movement away from the TDC mark. If the mark has moved more than 10 degrees, replace the timing chain and sprockets. For inspection with the cover removed, disconnect the battery cable, detach accessories blocking access to the timing chain cover, and position the number one piston at TDC on the compression stroke. Remove the vibration damper and timing chain cover, establishing reference points to measure chain deflection. If the deflection exceeds 1/2-inch, install a new timing chain and sprockets. Inspect the camshaft and crankshaft gears for damage or wear, replacing them if necessary. For timing chain and sprocket removal, ensure the number one piston is at TDC, remove the timing chain cover, align the crankshaft and camshaft sprocket marks, and remove the sprockets and chain as a unit. Finally, for installation, clean surfaces, install the crankshaft sprocket, position the chain over the camshaft sprocket, and align timing marks. Install the fuel pump drive, apply Loctite, and tighten the camshaft sprocket bolt. Reinstall the timing chain cover, lubricate the vibration damper hub, and reinstall remaining parts, checking for leaks.

Q:
How do you remove the timing chain(s) and Timing Chain Tensioner on Lincoln Town Car Overhead cam (OHC) engine? Posted by Customer
A:
To remove the timing chain(s), start by disconnecting the negative battery cable and positioning the number one cylinder on TDC. Remove components to access the timing chain cover and then remove the cover, along with the camshaft roller followers. Slide off the crankshaft position sensor toothed-wheel, ensuring correct orientation marked "rear." Use appropriate camshaft holding tools to prevent movement, crucial for maintaining TDC position. Remove the right side timing chain tensioner, followed by the right timing chain and stationary guide. Repeat the process for the left side. If necessary, remove the crankshaft sprockets, camshaft sprockets, and camshaft sprocket spacers, noting their positions. Inspect teeth, keyways, chains, and guides for wear or damage, replacing any defective parts. Check tensioner operation and oil feed, ensuring it moves freely and is not clogged. During installation, ensure clean mating surfaces, install stationary chain guides, and, if removed, place crankshaft sprockets correctly. Install the left timing chain on the camshaft sprocket, aligning the bright link with the dimple, and loop it under the crankshaft sprocket. Align timing marks and repeat for the right side. Compress the tensioner, lock it, and install it with the guide assembly. Apply pressure to extend the tensioner, removing slack from the chain. Recheck all timing marks, rotate the crankshaft, and verify proper assembly. The remaining installation steps are the reverse of removal.
