    Q:
How to replace a blown fuse link in a wiring system on Ford Fairmont? Posted by Customer
    A:
Fuse links are used in circuits without standard fuses, providing overload protection. They're smaller than the circuit wire and color-coded: green (14 gauge), orange (16), yellow (17), red (18), and blue (20). These links are non-repairable and must be replaced with an identical new one. To replace, disconnect the battery ground and the damaged link from the starter relay. Cut and discard the damaged link, strip 1/2 inch insulation from the circuit wire, and crimp in a suitable new link. Solder each end of the new link, insulate with electrical tape, and reconnect everything. Test the circuit afterwards for proper operation.

    Q:
What Are the Protective Components in the Car's Electrical Circuits, and How Should Fuse Inspection, removal and installation Be Conducted Safely on Ford Fairmont? Posted by Customer
    A:
Cars' electrical circuits are safeguarded by fuses, circuit breakers, and fusible links, located under the dashboard. Each fuse protects a specific circuit, identified on the panel. If an electrical component fails, first check its fuse, identifiable by a broken metal element if blown. Use plastic fuse pullers for removal and installation, and ensure the correct amperage rating for each circuit. Bypassing a fuse can damage the system. If a new fuse fails immediately, locate and fix the cause, typically a short circuit, before replacement.

    Q:
What are fuses and how do they function in electrical circuits on Ford Mustang? Posted by Customer
    A:
The electrical circuits of the vehicle are safeguarded by a combination of fuses, circuit breakers, and fusible links, with two fuse and relay boxes present, one installed at the engine compartment while the other is installed at inside the vehicle near the right side behind the kick panel. The fuses provided guard different circuits and the circuits whose fuses have been provided are labeled on the fuse panel cover. Miniature fuses with blades terminal type plug are installed in the fuse block so they can be individually replaced without any tools. To check a fuse, a test light can be inserted into the terminal tips to check for power; often if power is present on one and not the other-the fuse is blown, and this is easily discerned without having to remove the fuse. Blown fuses must be replaced with the correct type of fuse since changing the rating of the fuse minimizes the circuit protection. When a fuse burns out and is replaced and it burns out again, then the problem should be looked at this time as a short circuit that results from faulty wiring. Fusible links work in the same way as fuses where they melt and thus interrupt the circuit when the electrical load it carries goes beyond the safe maximums it can handle; normally located in the wiring harness to the alternator. Although it looks like a slightly heavier wire, a fusible link is actually of lesser gauge than the wire it insulates, and if it melts, then the reason has to be ascertained so that the same situation is not repeated. In order to replace a burnt fusible link one has cut out the link and insert a new link in the same gauge size and properly solder the connection with appropriate insulations. In case of obtaining the appropriate fusible link, it may be required to replace the complete cable between the battery and the alternator.

    Q:
How are the Electrical Circuits Protected and Managed in Lincoln Mark VII, and how to Replace and Troubleshoot fuse? Posted by Customer
    A:
The electrical circuits of the vehicle are protected by a combination of fuses, circuit breakers and fusible links. The fuse block is located below the left side of the dash. Later models have two fuse blocks, one for standard fuses located under the instrument panel on the left side of the dashboard and one for high current fuses in the engine compartment, adjacent to the battery. Disconnect the cable to the negative battery terminal before replacing high current fuses. On earlier models the fuses are tubular glass body types while on later models miniaturized fuses are employed. These compact fuses, with blade terminal design, allow fingertip removal and replacement. If an electrical component fails, always check the fuse first. The best way to check a fuse is with a test light. Check for power at the exposed terminal tips of each fuse. If power is present on one side of the fuse but not the other, the fuse is blown. A blown fuse can also be confirmed by visually inspecting it. Be sure to replace blown fuses with the correct type. Fuses of different ratings are physically interchangeable, but only fuses of the proper rating should be used. Replacing a fuse with one of a higher or lower value than specified is not recommended. Each electrical circuit needs a specific amount of protection. The amperage value of each fuse is molded into the fuse body. If the replacement fuse immediately fails, don't replace it again until the cause of the problem is isolated and corrected. In most cases, the cause will be a short circuit In the wiring caused by a broken or deteriorated wire.

    Q:
How Should You Inspect and Replace Fuses, Fusible Links, and Circuit Breakers on Ford Explorer? Posted by Customer
    A:
There are fuses, cartridge-type fusible links, and circuit breakers to protect the electrical circuits; the two fuse panels are found in each of the power distribution boxes, both in the engine room and inside the car. Fuse panels contain miniaturized fuses whose replacement requires the use of fingers and thumbs; if an electrical component fails it is best to check the fuse as part of the diagnosis using a test light to check power at the 'tip' of the terminal; a fused circuit can be seen with the naked eye. Each of the fuses operates one or more circuits and the interior of the fuse panel contains the fuses, a puller tool for the fuses and additional fuses with an identification chart. The engine compartment fuse panel can be released by pressing the tab that is above the emblem to pull it up and the foot well fuse panel in earlier models drops down, but in the later models this requires the removal of the plastic cover. One should not replace a blown fuse with another type of fuse because of each circuit's protection requirements it is risky to use a fuse with the different amperage value; the amperage value is always indicated molded in the fuse body where by the color code indicates the different amperages. Before replacing a fuse, it is recommended that all electrical components and the ignition switch should be turned off and never should a fuse be replaced with metal or foil to prevent aggravation of the electrical system damage. In case a replacement fuse blows almost immediately, don't replace it again until the root cause which most of the time is a short circuit arising from a compromised wire is fixed.

    Q:
How should you check the fuses for the 1987 Mercury Lynx? Posted by Customer
    A:
Before removing the fuses to check them, turn the ignition switch to the On position and probe each terminal at the top of each fuse with a test light connected to a good ground. If the fuse is good, there will be power available to both terminals. If a fuse is blown, one side will have power to it but the other side will not. Visually inspect the element for evidence of damage.
