How to remove the timing chain cover on Lincoln Mark VII Overhead cam (OHC) engine? Posted by Customer
    A:
Begin by removing the negative battery cable to pull off the Timing Cover. After that, take out the oil filter after draining away the engine oil. Then, remove the water pump pulley, drivebelt, and crankshaft pulley respectively. You should also disconnect the camshaft and crankshaft sensors as well as DIS modules. In addition, the power steering pump bolts are taken off and moved aside. Besides, there is a need to remove the accessory drive belt idler as well as valve covers at both ends. Moreover, Timing Cover bolts as well as the ones under the oil pan will be removed. Finally, use your soft hammer to gently tap it free from its place on the block to separate it from there. The next step is to apply RTV sealant into it and lubricate the timing chains plus the crankshaft oil seal. For instance, the front cover should be installed closely before the bolt are tightened over it.

    Q:
How do I remove the timing chain cover on Lincoln Continental Overhead valve (OHV)engines? Posted by Customer
    A:
To take off the Timing Cover, start by doing all of the water pump removal procedures up to actually removing the pump. Drain oil from the engine, remove the oil filter, disconnect and cap off fuel inlet hose at fuel pump outlet, and remove crankshaft vibration damper. On 7.5L (460 cid) engine slide the crankshaft sleeve off and remove the left-over Timing Cover-to-block bolts. Remove all accessory brackets that are attached to Timing Cover. From beneath the vehicle, cut flush with a razor knife oil pan gasket on its face against an engine block then unbolt oil pan-to-Timing Cover bolts. Take out remaining bolts and lightly tap Timing Cover loose using a soft-faced hammer. For installation purposes remove circular rubber seal from front of oil pan replace it with rag such as shop one in oil pan opening. Prepare all surfaces, cut two sections from new oil pan gasket apply them to oil pan using gasket contact adhesive. Use ATV sealant for sealing between oil pan and block joints while installing circular rubber seal in cutout on oil pan bottom surface. Lubricate timing chain and crankshaft front oil seal lips; apply ATV sealant to cover gasket then position it on engine. Apply ATV sealant to where Oil Pan, Block and Timing Cover meet each other. Use Teflon pipe sealant for threads' application before installing bolts so that gaskets/seals remain intact within their respective places. While aligning cover with either damper or sleeve tighten bolts finally tightening cover-to-block bolts again; this is after tightening them as necessary after aligning them with either damper or sleeve which may be necessary for proper torque application. Remove vibration damper; reinstall remaining parts in reverse order; add engine coolant & motor-oil then operate engine checking for leakage.

    Q:
How to remove and install Timing Cover on Ford Thunderbird? Posted by Customer
    A:
To remove the fan and water pump, first drain the engine oil and remove the oil filter; for supercharged engines, also remove the oil cooler. Next, take off the crankshaft vibration damper and unbolt all brackets attached to the timing cover, ensuring to tie the power steering pump aside with hoses still connected. For air-conditioned models, leave the compressor in place while removing its front support bracket. Position the number one piston at TDC on the compression stroke, then remove the distributor or synchronizer and intermediate shaft. After that, remove the oil pan and unbolt the ignition timing indicator. Gently tap the timing cover loose with a soft-face hammer to separate it from the block, being cautious not to use excessive force, and double-check that all bolts are removed, especially the one under the oil filter housing. For installation, use a gasket scraper to clean all surfaces of old gasket material and sealant, then clean them with lacquer thinner or acetone. Lubricate the timing chain and crankshaft front oil seal lips with engine oil, apply a thin coat of ATV sealant to the block side of the new gasket, and position it on the engine. Then, apply sealant to the gasket surface of the cover and attach it, ensuring the gasket remains in place. Install the bolts finger tight and only tighten them to the specified torque after installing the water pump, as some bolts also secure the timing cover. Reinstall the oil pan and the remaining parts in reverse order of removal, ensuring to install the oil cooler for supercharged models. Finally, add engine oil and coolant, run the engine, set the ignition timing, and check for leaks.

    Q:
How to remove and install Timing Chain and Timing Cover in 3.3L inline six cylinder engine on Mercury Capri? Posted by Customer
    A:
To remove the components, first drain the cooling system and disconnect the hoses, then take out the cooling fan, drive belts, and the crankshaft and water pump drive pulleys. Next, remove the bolts securing the Timing Cover to the engine block and oil pan, carefully prying the cover away from the engine block at the top without damaging the mating surface. Scrape off all gasket material and sealant from the engine block and cover mating surfaces, cleaning them with lacquer thinner or acetone. Before taking out the timing chain and sprockets, check the chain deflection by turning the crankshaft counterclockwise to take up slack on the left side, establishing a reference point to measure the distance to the center of the left run of the chain, then turning the crankshaft clockwise to take up slack in the right run, pressing the slack chain in the left run toward the center and measuring the distance again. The difference between the two measurements indicates total deflection; if it exceeds 114-inch, replace the timing chain and sprockets as a set. Rotate the crankshaft until the timing marks on the sprockets align, then remove the camshaft sprocket bolt and pull both sprockets away from the engine. If reusing the chain and sprockets, clean them in solvent and inspect for damage or wear patterns, replacing them if necessary. For installation, position the camshaft and crankshaft sprockets in the chain with the timing marks aligned, slide the sprockets onto the crankshaft and camshaft, and install the camshaft sprocket bolt, tightening it to the specified torque. Before putting on the Timing Cover, check the oil seal's condition and replace it if it is dried out or leaking. Apply RTV sealant to the new Timing Cover gasket, position it on the cover, and coat all exposed portions with sealant. Install the cover carefully, using a thin-wall socket over the crankshaft end to prevent damage to the seal, and tighten all mounting bolts to the specified torque in three or four equal steps, following a criss-cross pattern to avoid warping.
