Remove the fuel rail and injectors, noting the spacers beneath the rail.

1. Relieve the fuel system pressure and disconnect the cable from the negative battery terminal. 2. Drain the cooling system. 3. Remove the intake manifold and the exhaust manifolds. 4. Remove the valve covers. 5. Remove the drivebelt and the drivebelt tensioner. 6. Remove the camshafts and lifters. 7. Remove the two Camshaft Position (CMP) sensors at the rear of each cylinder head and disconnect any other electrical connectors.

Use a tap of the correct size to chase the threads in the head bolt holes.

Remove the heat stove from the exhaust manifold.

Before removing the valves, they should be labeled and stored in a way that keeps them separate, ensuring they can be reinstalled in the same valve guides they were removed from. A small plastic bag with an appropriate label can be used for this purpose.

Remove the ignition coil bracket and dipstick tube.

Carefully position the head on the block without disturbing the gasket.

Take care not to damage the aluminum alloy and ensure that carbon does not enter the oil and water passages.

Pull up the slack chain and insert the camshaft sprocket, aligning it with the camshaft, but do not tighten the sprocket bolt at this time.

Shims can be added under the springs to correct it.

Remove the valve covers, rocker arms and pushrods, intake manifold, and drivebelt.

31. Install new cylinder head bolts and follow the recommended sequence to tighten the bolts to the torque. All bolts are tightened in the first step, then only the eight 12 mm bolts are tightened in Steps 2 and 3. Mark a stripe on each of the 12 mm head bolts to help keep track of the bolts that have been tightened the additional 90-degrees.

Loosen the rocker arms and remove the pushrods.

Check the installed valve spring height with a ruler graduated in 1/32-inch increments or a dial caliper. The measurement is taken from the top of each spring seat or shim(s) to the bottom of the retainer.

Once the valves and related components have been removed and stored in an organized manner, the head should be thoroughly cleaned and inspected.

Caution 1: These engines are difficult to work on and require special tools for many procedures. For any procedure involving timing chains, camshafts, or cylinder head removal, the steps must be read carefully, and disassembly must proceed using the special tools; otherwise, damage to the engine could result. Caution 2: The engine must be completely cool when the cylinder heads are removed. Failure to allow the engine to cool off could result in cylinder head warpage. Caution 3: The manufacturer states that the cylinder head cannot be machined in the event of warping. If the cylinder head warpage exceeds 0.001 inch (0.0254 mm), it must be replaced.
