1. Relieve the fuel system pressure. 2. Disconnect the cable from the negative battery terminal. 3. Drain the cooling system. 4. Remove the upper and lower intake manifolds. 5. Drain the engine oil and remove the oil pan. 6. Remove the engine front cover. 7. Remove the timing chains, camshafts, rocker arms, and lash adjusters as necessary. 8. Remove the exhaust manifold(s). 9. Remove the water pump and the water pump housing from the left bank (front) cylinder head. 10. For 2009 or later models, remove the upper radiator support brackets. On all models, remove the oil dipstick and its tube. 11. Disconnect the EGA valve pipe that connects the EGA valve to the rear exhaust manifold. 12. Remove hoses and electrical connectors from the coolant bypass tube, then remove the coolant bypass tube.

Loosen the ten cylinder head bolts progressively and by half a turn at a time, working in the reverse order of the tightening sequence.

If the cylinder head sticks to the block, pry only on a casting protrusion to prevent damaging the mating surfaces. Remove and discard the cylinder head gasket.

Be careful how you choose to free it; do not pry the head between the mating surfaces, as this can damage the sealing surfaces for the gasket.
