    Q:
How do you remove and install the Cooling Fan and Fan Motor on Mercury Capri? Posted by Customer
    A:
The Electrodrive cooling fan system is installed on 1980 and later turbocharged 2.3L engines, as well as on 1982 and later non-turbocharged 2.3L engines. It utilizes an electrically-driven fan motor which is triggered by a coolant temperature sensor. Turbocharged, carbureted vehicles also have a temperature sensor in the base of the carburetor which switches the fan on when carburetor temperature reaches 155-degrees F. On air conditioned vehicles, the fan operates whenever the A/C compressor is engaged, regardless of coolant temperature. The fan controller (1981 and later models, except Fuel Economy Leader) is located under the instrument panel near the steering column. To test the motor, unplug the electrical connector at the motor and connect one jumper wire from the motor positive terminal to the battery positive terminal, and the other jumper wire from the motor negative terminal to ground. If the fan still does not work, replace the motor. If the motor tested OK, the fault lies in the coolant temperature switch, the fan controller, the EEC system, or the wiring which connects these components. Carefully check all wiring and connections. If no obvious problems are found, further diagnosis should be done by a dealer service department or repair shop. For removal and installation, disconnect the negative cable from the battery, detach the fan wiring harness from its clip and unplug the connector, remove the fan mounting screws and take the fan assembly out, remove the retainer clip and take the fan off the motor shaft (note: remove any burrs on the motor shaft before attempting to remove the fan), remove the fan motor-to-bracket nuts, then separate the motor from the bracket. Installation is the reverse of the removal procedure.

    Q:
How to replace a flex-blade fan and a clutch-type fan on Mercury Capri? Posted by Customer
    A:
A flex-blade fan is used on 1979 through 1981 models. Flexible blades are riveted to a central stamped hub, reducing drag for lower noise and lower fuel consumption. Check the fan carefully for cracks or separation of the blades from the hub, and replace if any issues are found. To remove the fan, detach the fan shroud from the radiator and push it over the fan, then unbolt the fan and spacer from the water pump pulley. To install the fan, reverse the removal procedure. The clutch-type fan employs rigid blades with an aluminum fan clutch at the center. Check for cracks and fluid leakage, and replace if necessary. Try to move the fan blades in a front-to-rear direction and spin the fan by hand to ensure proper functioning. To remove the fan, detach the fan shroud from the radiator and push it over the fan, then unbolt the fan and clutch from the water pump pulley. To separate the clutch from the fan, remove the attaching bolts. When storing the fan, place the marked side down. To install the fan, reverse the removal procedure.
