For preventive maintenance, regular oil changes are necessary. Dilution and contamination make the engine oil lose its viscosity thus making it unavoidable for premature engine wear to occur. Change the oil filter each time you change your engine oil. Prepare for spills with rags or newspapers. To have better access, lift the vehicle on a hoist, ramp or jack stand. Start the engine, let it warm up, and park on a level surface. Remove the oil filler cap and raise the vehicle on jack stands. Position a drain pan under the plug of the oil pan, remove it, and let all the oil drain out completely. Check for metal particles in case there are any signs of serious problems inside your engine. Clean and reinstall the drain plug. Move the drain pan under the filter loose screw by hand then unscrew it. Clean the mounting surface and lubricate the new filter's gasket.

After completing the oil change, start the engine, check for leaks, and recheck the oil level using the dipstick. Additionally, dispose of the old oil in an environmentally responsible manner and monitor for leaks and the proper oil level during the initial post-change drives to ensure everything is functioning correctly.
