Move the drain pan under the oil filter, loosen the filter using a filter wrench, and unscrew it by hand once it's loose, ensuring you tilt the open end upward to prevent oil spillage. Wipe the mounting surface on the block clean, ensuring the old gasket is not stuck. Lubricate the new filter's rubber gasket with engine oil and screw it into place by hand, avoiding the use of a filter wrench. Remove all tools from under the vehicle, lower it, and add 3-1/2 quarts of new oil to the engine. Wait for the oil to drain and check the level with a dipstick. If it's in the safe range, install the filler cap. Start the engine briefly, check for leaks around the oil pan drain plug and filter, and tighten them if necessary. Stop the engine, wait a few minutes, and recheck the oil level. During the first few trips after an oil change, monitor for leaks and maintain the proper oil level. Dispose of the old oil properly by recycling it through local auto parts stores, disposal facilities, or environmental agencies; avoid pouring it on the ground or down a drain.
