    Q:
What are fuses and how do they protect electrical circuits on Ford Taurus? Posted by Customer
    A:
The electrical circuits of the vehicle are protected by fuses, circuit breakers, and fusible links and they include the main fuse/relay panel which is in the engine compartment and the interior fuse/relay panel which is in the passenger compartment. Fuses are available in small and large sizes and have the same blade terminal design that, while the medium and large fuses can be taken out by hand, the small ones have to be removed using pliers or the plastic fuse puller. Fusible links are located in the harness to the right of the underhood fuse box, and are used to protect circuits that don't have fuses or circuits that carry a large amount of current, for example the wire between the alternator and the battery. When the electrical part is not functioning, the fuses must be inspected; the use of a test lamp to look for power at the terminal ends; if there is power on the one end but not the other, then the fuse has been blown; this can also be seen by observing the element between terminals. This is because replacing blown fuses requires getting the correct type even if physically they can be replaced by other higher rated fuses, a given circuit needs to be protected by a given fuse rating. If a replacement fuse blows as soon as it is fitted the cause is usually short circuit owing to faulty wire and the real problem must be corrected before replacing the fuse again. In case of replacing a fusible link which has been blown, one should use an equivalent one; if the same blows, then it indicates that there is some problem in the circuit and it should be checked before replacing the link.

    Q:
How can you check if a fuse is blown for the 2005 Ford F-150? Posted by Customer
    A:
The best way to check a fuse is with a test light. Check for power at the exposed terminal tips of each fuse. If power is present on one side of the fuse but not the other, the fuse is blown. A blown fuse can also be confirmed by visually inspecting it; when a fuse blows, the element between the terminals melts.
