    How to remove and install the steering gear in Mercury Mariner? Posted by Customer

    Disconnect the battery cable for 2007 or prior models, remove the rear transaxle mount and bracket, detach power steering pressure and return line bracket bolts, remove the intermediate shaft pinch bolt and nut, drain power steering fluid, loosen the front wheel lug nuts, raise the vehicle, remove front wheels, disconnect tie-rod ends, mark U-joint and Rack And Pinion input shafts with a paint pen or similar tool, place a drain pan under the rack and pinion to catch any spilled fluid, remove rack and pinion mounting bolts and take out the rack and pinion; during installation align match marks on components being assembled so that they will fit together properly when reinstalled later by tightening bolts which hold them in place as directed using torque values specified for each fastener size according to specifications. The Powertrain Control Module (PCM) must be reprogrammed by connecting the diagnostic scan tool to communicate with the module then follow the instructions screen to complete this step correctly; fill the power steering reservoir carefully not to overfill it causing spillage because excessive levels may lead to noise damage seals resulting expensive repairs required time-consuming process involving disassembling car apart again.
