On 3.0L models, the transaxle must be removed.

Another procedure for removing the seal is to drill a small hole on each side of the seal and place a self-tapping screw in each hole. Use these screws as a means of pulling the seal out without having to pry on it.

Use a two-pin spanner to hold the crankshaft pulley while removing the crankshaft pulley retaining bolt.

The seal installation can be performed more easily by unbolting and removing the seal retainer plate. Remove all the mounting bolts, then use two of the retainer-to-oil pan bolts and start them into the two threaded holes in the retainer plate. Tightening these two bolts alternately will push the retainer from the engine. Remove all traces of RTV sealant and apply a 3/16-inch bead of RTV where the block and oil pan flanges meet.

Raise the vehicle and support it securely on jackstands.

The flywheel/driveplate should be removed (Section 16).

A special installation tool, available at most auto parts stores, should be used to install the crankshaft pulley/damper.

Clean the bore to remove any old seal material and corrosion. Support the cover on blocks of wood and position the new seal in the bore with the open end of the seal facing IN. A small amount of oil applied to the outer edge of the new seal will make installation easier.

Install the fan/clutch assembly and fan shroud.

Start the engine and check for leaks.

The seal can be reinstalled in either of two ways. Either use a special tool such as the one used by the manufacturer or the seal can be driven into the bore with a large socket and hammer until it's completely seated. Select a socket that's the same outside diameter as the seal (a section of pipe can be used if a socket isn't available).

Clean the mating surface for the oil seal carrier on the cylinder block and the crankshaft. Carefully remove and polish any burrs or raised edges on the crankshaft that may have caused the seal to fail.

Position the new seal in the bore with the open end of the seal facing IN.

Lubricate the oil seal contact surface with multi-purpose grease or clean engine oil and apply a dab of RTV sealant to the front end of the keyway.

On 3.5L engines, remove the air filter housing pipe and the turbocharger pipes.

The retainer should be installed to the engine and all the bolts should be installed within 10 minutes of applying the sealant.

Position the new seal onto the crankshaft, ensuring that if marked, the words "THIS SIDE OUT" on the seal face out, toward the rear of the engine.
